I'm a sports journo and one of the biggest pieces of advice I can give is; if you aren't on Twitter, get one. Follow journalists from your local station/s. Interact with them - don't suck up to them - and form a rapport. Don't bombard them with articles/blogs you may have written, let them choose to read them when you publicly tweet the link. Having a rapport with local journos will get them talking about you.
Also no matter which area of news you want to go in, buy this fucking book, read it cover to cover several times. Live by it. It is the bible. http://www.journalism.org/node/71
Never lose your humanity or humility. I've had times when I've watched our bulletin go to air with dead bodies from Syria or mothers crying over their children killed in the streets and thought "wow this is good pics". That is the wrong mindset. Always remember you are a person first, journalist second.
Read other journalism. Especially good journalism. Some of my favourites;
Fatal Distraction - Pulitzer Prize winner (WARNING QUITE DISTRESSING)
Here Be Monsters - about three friends from an island in the Pacific who get stuck in a dinghy floating through the ocean
If you can get your hands on this book it is a terrific read. It is Jon Ronson, a journalist, documenting his travels in search of the Bilderberg Group and meeting the people who believe they exist - Ronson is also the guy who wrote The Men Who Stare At Goats
Other than that I try to read 3 or 4 articles on longform.org each day.
Above all, because sports journalism is rife with this and I hate it, don't suck up. Always be a bulldog. Always be fighting for a story. Don't be a shill. This job is supposed to be a public service, it's not about you.

Would you ever do a movie based around the McEvedy Shield/Wellington high school culture? I really want
East beast, thunder thighs, eating too much Georgie Pies
East beast, humongous hips, who ate all the fish and chips?
To be in a movie
