Before urbanization and all that harbin used to get a lot colder in the winter. My dad said when he was a kid it would once in a while hit -40. If you're peeing outside you would have to hit you pee with a stick just so it doesn't freeze while you're going at it. I spent a few years of my childhood in harbin. Really interesting place with a lot of Russian architecture. Too damn cold though.

Yea the Russian influence is strong. They’re one of the only places in China that has been eating Western style bread and sausage for a long time. It’s not really a famous city to foreigners but I feel like it’s worth checking out.

Its very very very unlikely that the Chinese government would look for someone like OP. Sure, the government is shitty, and technically could arrest you for shit like this, but they generally dont give a shit about a rando enough. People dont actually live in constant fear in China. People talk shit about the government all the time online and with their friends. Sure, you wouldn't be able to make a post like this on a major Chinese site, and you might get banned for saying stuff, but no theyre not gonna catch you and murder you -- youre just not relevant enough. Its shitty but its not as bad as people think in the west.

Why tf would he say he works in media then? Idk.. Would you guys accept anything that isn't hating everything about china without calling someone a government agent? Do you think theres a chance we are exposed to biased western media that makes us think china is worse than it is?
