That's not the point of the pushback, academically. The idea is that running too much can overexert yourself. To hyperbole, a person who runs to exhaustion/heat stroke/etc isn't going to be as healthy as a runner who runs moderately.
James O'Keefe Jr. has shown that moderate exercise confers more health benefits to the heart than extreme exercise does. An extreme exerciser still generally does better than no exercise, but moderate exercise does better than extreme exercise.
The issue is when media outlets such as time.com posts headlines such as "Extreme Workouts: When Exercise Does More Harm than Good;" that's not what the research suggests.
