Although it is true that it was not Gordon Brown's government that prosecuted Alan Turing, it was the British government and Gordon Brown is the modern day representative of that government. Turing and any other homosexual prosecuted deserve an apology from their government. To deny them that because it was not the current government that persecuted them seems unfair; although I understand the argument that you shouldn't blame the son for the sins of the father, to blame a previous government that no longer exists makes no one responsible for the actions it took.

Just as the Pope can - and has - apologized for the actions of the Catholic Church in the past, I think that the British government and whoever its current representative is should apologize for the wrongful actions taken in the past. It seems strange to so divorce the past government and the current one, unless there has been some violent overthrow of the government à la French revolution in which case it would obviously not be sensible to blame the current government for the sins of the previous one.

All in all, I would think that the closure received comes with the acknowledgement that what happened happened, the government was responsible, and the government was wrong in its beliefs and its actions. The closure comes from addressing the issue instead of trying to gloss over it, or blaming it on something that makes it impossible and fruitless to try and get an apology from like a previous government that no longer exists. Even if Gordon Brown's government wasn't the one that actually committed the wrong, that doesn't mean that it can't do a small part in righting the wrong that was done.

Who do you think of yourself as having done it for mostly? Alan Turing's sake? The sake of all homosexuals wrongly prosecuted? For the greater homosexual cause today/homosexuals everywhere? For everyone to show that governments can and should take responsibility for their actions in the past? Of course it's entirely possible and in fact probable that it was some or all of these, but I was just wondering if there was one particularly strong reason behind your - awesome - actions.
