What would be your advice for PhD students that want to break into science writing / science journalism?

Thanks for that very blunt assessment. I currently don't consider doing this as a full-time job, but rather something on the side to my "actual" work in science. In a way, I think it really is a shame that something with such a societal value is compensated so meagerly ...
