So I recently became a CDL examiner and Ive had an issue that happens regularly with certain students who test and im not sure why. They seem to specifically come from one school that uses a truck with a splitter to test in, and id say 90% of their students always have problems with shifting, and not just a slight grinding of the gears- i mean like regularly grinding gears, inability to shift into the appropriate gears and sometimes even fully stopping in the roadway as they try to put the truck in gear. At first i thought it might be the truck they were using because it was happening every single time, but when i had one student who shifted without any issues i figured it had to do with the fact that many did not appear to be double clutching with this truck and looked to be shifting as if it was a normal manual transmission. Does this mean anyone driving a truck that uses a splitter has to double clutch or is this shifting issue students have due to something else? One thing about being an examiner (in CA) that many dont know is we actually aren't required to have a Class A license. As a result many dont have specific knowledge of how shifting works with different rigs, and unfortunately this includes myself.
