If the US is where you plan to go, I'd look into it to start the process immediately. Even asylum seekers have trouble coming here. I'm sure you would be able to contact an immigration lawyer. Because you would be a political asylum seeker, the ACLU would possibly be able to hook you up with some pro bono legal help to come here, if not them, there's plenty of immigration lawyers who want to help asylum seekers come here.
