I imagine they meant they'd didn't make money off writing for that period. They weren't just sitting in their basement writing for 20 years. Most (if not all) writers have jobs until they can afford to write full time. You fit it in where you can.

I'm an unpublished writer (yet to even submit), and I've managed to write three 600 page books in three years despite working 40-50 hours a week. Think of much time people spend on reddit and Facebook, put half that time into writing and you end up with a book pretty quick.

You're right, of course. OP proves that it's possible, but it's like getting YouTube famous as a musician. You still want a team working for you, advertising, marketing, selling albums if you can get it.

The dream is to be a published author, but if you have to do it yourself than do it. Back to the musician analogy, it's great to be the house band at a local bar, it's better to have people arranging your nationwide tour.

Hi Tracey, thank you for you hard work and dedication. Two questions.

  1. How has the Syrian revolution been affected by the Arab Spring and their social media based means of organization?

  2. Being a female journalist working in Syria must have been extremely dangerous. Besides the military action taking place, did you find yourself in potentially violent situations?
