I had this same procedure done, too, pretty much the same story as OP. For me, the revelation didn't come until my early 30's when I really slimmed down and a doctor said " yeah, it's not fat." My childhood pediatrician in the 80's used to give me shit about my chest saying I'm eating too much and it was all my fault, and it was more or less traumatizing.
What did doctors tell you growing up (if anything?)

I was in your exact same boat. I was lucky enough to have the money saved up and got the operation, but you still might want to go in for consultations. Many doctors offer payment plans or take credit cards. I can't speak to your financial situation but if you look at it like a car loan, it's totally worth it in the end.

That's good to hear. My doctor slapped my chest once at age 12 and said "stop eating so much candy!" If he were still alive, I'd love to tell him to fuck off.

No insurance, for me it was $8k. I went to a doctor who specializes in the procedure for men since most cosmetic surgeons mainly do breast reductions in women.
The price does suck, but most doctors take credit cards or have their own payment plans.

I had 2 consultations ahead of time (which were free, some docs charge). Also saw another doctor just to get an idea.
I went in on a Tuesday and took the rest of the week off of work, was back on Monday. It helped that my job isn't labor intensive (office job).
Honestly, I was winded for about a week and a half. Maybe 3-4 weeks I avoided lifting heavy objects. Bruising went a way in about a month, too Basically, your blood just finds places to pool up in parts of your body. A friend of mine just had her crooked nose corrected a month ago, and she still has black eyes because the excess blood gather beneath them. The full scarring took up to a year to heal.
Everyone's body is different though, so times all vary.
