Ever go to a waterpark and you had to wait in line FOREVER just to slide down? At Action Park, there was an area I think I remember being called "Surf Hill". You'd walk up the stairs on either side of the hill with a slick foam pad. There were 4-6 lanes with burms between lanes if I remember right but basically water being shot over the whole hill. You'd get to the top, wait for the person in front of you to go, get your own running start and slide down.

Agency in this case meant "use your own judgement" as to how long to wait in between riders. It also meant "if you feel like dicking around in the bottom pool instead of getting out, you're going to get hit".

Today, you go to a water park and they have staff members for every single lane telling you how you must sit on the mat (FEET FIRST ONLY!), how long you must wait in between riders (The other person must CLEAR the pool before you can even start) etc. This means less riding, long lines of people, less fun BUT a lot safer.

I always thought Gerrymandering is despicable, but I listened to a "99 Percent Invisible" episode they did in connection with fivethirtyeight and it really opened my eyes as to how hard it is to get right even when evil isn't being done. There was a fantastic example in North Carolina where it helped with minority representation in congress. That was contrasted with clearly biased efforts that led to hijacked democracy. Really educational and understandable.

Announced to my employees we would have our Xmas party ax throwing. They all thought I was nuts. We had a FANTASTIC time! Programmers learning to throw axes was the BEST!

I want to build a place to practice in my backyard and have two questions:

  1. What do you call it? Is it a range? Target thing?
  2. Are there specifications or best practices design and building the thing?

Thanks. Much fun!

I took the day off from work yesterday and made it a "Galaktikon II Day" for myself. I held off from reading the comic until the album was out. Listening to your music makes me feel like someone else in the world understands me. How else would someone be able to create that music if you DIDN'T understand me? To that end. . .

  • So many times when an author writes something, they put themselves in it as a character. Was your robot who only speaks in guitar modeled after you or someone else?

  • Do you keep in contact at all with Bear McCreary? If so, do you speak in harpsichord or actual words?

My Galaktikon dinner yesterday if you are interested. http://i.imgur.com/qygM1yq.jpg
