Why does the media insist on giving equal consideration to lies as they do to honest opinions?

For example: Rep. McCrazypants is spouting crazy stuff about Barack Obama and a reporter or anchor will close the interview by saying "That's really interesting. We'll be sure to keep a close eye on this story." rather than challenging him on obvious falsehoods?
