You don't have to be 'a professional mermaid', per se...you can just be 'a mermaid'. There are a small handful of professional mermaids of note (you might be surprised to learn that this isn't a huge market), but there are hundreds and hundreds, literally dozens of us, of mermaids. /r/makeupaddiction would probably like to know about this sort of thing....imagine it's a pretty common question, and mermaid looks come up pretty often as it is.
As it happens, they use netting for their scales, too.
