Are you a SpAd? They’re the bane of my life at the moment (civil servant here. I jest... sort of).

As a civil servant I’m constantly frustrated when our jobs to provide impartial advice is dismissed as “we’re being too negative if we say something won’t work”, and by short-termism which ultimately leads to rush-jobs and never leaving enough time for things to settle and be assessed properly.

Is it that way for you within parliament? Are you often left frustrated by what seems to be the constant chasing of short-term, quick wins? Are the ministers? Or is it the party line?

Thanks so much for responding. It’s good to know that some ministers feel the same, but such a shame that they seem unable to do much. I worked with Anne Milton for a while and had a lot of respect for her and I’m pretty certain she jumped before she was pushed.

My colleagues and I are constantly frustrated by ministers with no actual expertise (think health and education) are responsible for critical health and education decisions. I think that lack of expertise also drives some of the towing party line. It’s building a portfolio until they can make SoS. I can imagine a former doctor or headteacher, or solicitor would be more willing to stand by impactful, long term policy making than spitting party rhetoric.

Thanks everyone for the shared sentiments! And thank you for replying!
