Why did they decide to move in together? Was it a matter of money/convenience, or was there anything else to it?

I lived in Kiev during the disaster, about 60 miles from Chernobyl. Didn't know anyone with symptoms. There were the usual stories of two headed cows being born, but the newspapers in Ukraine are like a fusion of a newspaper and tabloid, so the stories were not credible.
