Have you thought about D&D or other online communities as a distraction?

You can indeed. There are many online resources to do so such as roll20 and fantasy grounds. Essentially people use those to roll dice and keep track of their characters and they usually talk over voice chat systems such as TeamSpeak or Discord. There are even text only games that people run through discord.

There is a good subreddit r/lfg which is devoted to people looking to find a gaming group, many of which are online.

If you want to get an idea of what D&D is there are plenty of youtube videos and podcasts. I've recently been listening to Critical Roll's podcast (where you listen to them playing D&D), you can also watch their videos on YouTube.
