One of the big selling points of OxyContin was its 12 hour dosing schedule. Doctors were told to prescribe larger doses-- not more frequent ones-- for patients who were complaining of the medication wearing off early.

Are there reasons other than sales/marketing for keeping up the 12 hour dosing schedule? What would be required for doctors to be able to deviate from the manufacturer's recommendation?

It is partly about free advertising, but also about commercial exploitation of the company-owned art associated with the brand. The company that owns the logo can theoretically claim that your for-profit tv show is benefitting from using their intellectual property and sue you for including artwork that hasn't been cleared by its owner.
