British publications tend to make groups plural. So they'd say "Nirvana are a band" and "The Heat are playing".

American publications tend to make groups singular. FWIW, it sounds (as a North-Eastern American) really, really wrong to say "The Heat are playing" over "The Heat is playing".

What do you make of the idea of teaching AAVE-speaking children in AAVE (at least in primary school) to help them develop in their native dialect? Do you think it's reasonable to bring "Standard English" to the table later in their educations?
