Except conservatism as a concept, not just politically, has been linked with age. You get older, and your instincts go from "lets do this shit" to "I survived those first three decades...time to take it carefully."

Punishment is useless without understanding. I believe in an advanced civilization, where straight punishment for crimes should be paired with education and rehabilitation, if the punishment even stays around.

Is this like Nero, where historians (and Roman Christians) hated him, so he gradually became so smeared that many of the Anti-Christ's symbols and heralds are direct references to him?
