Continuing the that that OP started (nice AMA by the way), you can file for income-based repayment pretty easily after you file your taxes. I can't remember exactly how now, but last year I filed for income-based repayment the same day I did my taxes; all they needed was my social and permission to look up my taxes filed, and changed it within that billing cycle. Went from paying something like $400 a month to $11.63, but you need to reapply every year and interest still accrues. It only worked with my federal loans (which Sallie Mae is now in charge of incidentally) but still was a major relief.

It's fairly easy to do and totally worth it, one of the best financial decisions I've made.

Overtime is such a double-edged sword- the money is fantastic, but once you get older (for me, when I was 28) or have kids, it just sucks. Especially on overnight 12's.
