I've always pictured it as a more "Of Mice and Men" situation, Harry knew Marv's limitations but loved him anyway because Harry wouldn't have to face his own failings and loneliness alone. You were the part of Harry's brain that got him out of bed every morning reminding himself that he can't drink into an early grave. Marv would need taken care of, fed, watched over. Without that he would have killed himself years earlier.

IF they ever decided to make a Home Alone 3 you unfortunately would have to be shot in the head at the end by Harry before the police came because he knew you couldn't survive another stint in prison, and it would be the death of Harry as well because he has no place without his home (marv).
