Research is research. Various scientific degrees can teach you how to conduct qualitative studies, and usually to a much better standard than on a crim degree. The rest is mostly reading, knowledge, seminars, conferences, etc, which you can all do/attend without investing into a whole degree. On the plus side, with a different degree, you may also have something that could be more useful for other fields if you don't decide to go into a career linked to criminology.

"A new survey in the Netherlands has identified SpectraNet, a Nigerian Internet Service Provider (ISP), as the world’s most crime-infested; with over 62 per cent of the website hosted by the Lagos-based company found to be sending spam messages."
No misconceptions here. Don't try to deny that Nigeria is a huge source of scams. It's not just a stereotype.
