I think also that the European is a 'neutral' language.

You've got a country with several (many?) ethnic groups. If you make one groups language the official language, that group will have an advantage over the other language group.

By making the colonial language the official language, no one group has an advantage over another. Also, people who learn the colonial language will have better job prospects.
