Jake isn't lying. The screenplay for Nightcrawler is unique, to say the least. It paints a picture and it breaks the screenplay formatting mold in a way I wouldn't recommend to anybody, but it worked for Nightcrawler.

I'm sorry for your loss. My wife went through something similar when she was 8, and lost her father to two cancers when she was 19. She is now 34 and it still affects her.

It has been tough for her and her grown brother, who is in his 40's. Having loving friends, our four pets, and me around has helped her tremendously. Surround yourself with good people and pets! They love you unconditionally, even when humans have a rough time seeing you depressed.
