Do you have to write notes to yourself on how to operate newer technologies?

If you were to try learning a new skill, like playing the piano for instance, would your brain retain the training and muscle-memory you did in the previous days and you suddenly, surprisingly learn every day that you are master at that skill? Or would you spend every day back at square one?
