So think of this. Cochlear implant don't always work. So your kid is Deaf and you go to the doctor to "cure" him. He gets the cochlear implant and you wait a month or two before turning it on. Per the doctors recommendations you don't use any ASL around him because the doctors say that this will make him lazy and will lean upon ASL rather than learning to hear. So you do this and notice your child hasn't made the progress you think they should have. Come to find your child is profoundly Deaf and a cochlear implant hasn't and will never work. So you've got a 3 year old son who has been living without the means to express themselves, has fallen so severely behind in schooling because they have no natural language. You've doomed them to this future. And they spend the rest of their lives playing catch up,

If you never seen a child without the means to express themselves you should know they've got some of the most extreme cases of acting out, and given how few Dear people there are, most hearing people meeting them will assume all Deaf people are like this.

Deaf people can grow into wonderful articulate people, but people are so hell bent on making them "normal" they're thrown into countless surgeries without knowing if it will work for their child.

Personally, I hope I don't have Deaf children, because I know how difficult things were for my parents growing up. I certainly developed differently, and as a result I'm definitely a bit different than most people I know. But I am prepared if I do. Every partner I have had knows this is a possibility.
