Does health insurance typically cover the cost for voluntary donors? If not, does the medical system assist? What support services exist for donors?

Thank you for donating and for drawing attention to the need for organ transplantation and to the needs of voluntary transplant donors. My sister is attempting to get a double lung transplant, and it took us two years to get her in shape to be listed. We have no idea if she will live long enough to receive a transplant.

I only learned recently, that there is a living donor program for lung transplants. The living donors give one lobe of one lung and it does require two donors. Unfortunately, most transplant centers continue to prefer full lung transplants, rather than lobe only transplants although studies show that transplantation of lobes only bestows equal benefit and longevity post transplant. Having had a bilateral mastectomy I know what that surgery is like and so to me it’s a huge deal to consider donating a little bit of my lung.

I hope the NYPD is shamed into making this situation right.

Disability insurance coverage isn’t limited to accidents. It also covers long and short-term medical care and conditions.
