Actually it was partially inspired by the events of 2010 wherein the "Illegals Program", a network of russian spies, where uncovered and arrested in the states in particular a married couple who were arrested and had kept their spying hidden from their children before, allegedly, training up their eldest son to follow in their footsteps. They were known as Donald Heathfield and Tracey Lee Ann Foley.

The character of Kate also has some similarities with the most infamous spy caught at that time, Anna Chapman.

Of course the writers experience of tradecraft helps, but the events are pretty much based on real life.
