Because our society teaches us specific beauty standards and sometimes we're surprised when someone who doesn't meet those standards is still attractive to us. It's not a sign that he's a bad guy, just that he's been raised in a western-centric society and is encountering someone outside of the norm. This gives him a chance to re-evaluate his own standards for beauty. Or something.
