$20K? Are you fucking serious?

My son was hit by a car a while back, scared the shit out of his mom and I, but in the long run he was lucky to come out of it with just a couple broken bones. He had maybe a year of healing at most, and most of that was out of cast "just be smart about your physical activities" time.

I won't go into specifics, but the final settlement after lawyer and medical was much, much higher than that. 20K is ridiculously low.

Every day it just becomes more and more evident that America is fundamentally broken as a country.

True, but in this case it worked out great since there wasn't a trial, just a sentencing.
