I once tried to see how many times I could throw a hatchet up into the air and catch it.

The answer was four numbers less than the number of stitches I needed in my hand, and in case you were interested, I needed four stitches.

I work with young people and have several instances - one very recent - of them reporting sex crimes and it turning out that they were fabricated - the most recent one admitted that she made up a rape accusation against her ex boyfriend because she had been broken up with. I also have been the victim of a false allegation, where fortunately there were witnesses who were able to attest that what the accuser said happened, did not happen.

Do you think there is a problem with the "believe the victim" narrative as a default? Much of the language you use would indicate that you take this narrative yourself (e.g. "alleged perpetrator was never arrested" as opposed to "was not sufficient evidence to make an arrest", as well as your opening two sentences). What safeguards do you think should be in place to protect both parties involved - one from sexual offences, the other from false allegations?

On that note I'd also like to get ahead of the misleading statistic which is (something like) "only 2% of allegations are false" - that isn't true, and would be impossible to prove. Something like that number are proven to be false, and then the accuser is charged with the crime, with a great many more unproven to be either true or false. I know that for some of the young people that I work with, they've been accused and although it's been dropped and even in some cases admitted to be false, it hasn't been proven in court to be false, so they are actually making up the "accused sex attackers who get away with it" figures, not the "victims of false allegations" figures.

Edit: oh no this guy thinks things are maybe more nuanced than "every allegation is true", fill the comment with downvotes
