This is an interesting question, prima facie it just seems like we should obviously experience “now”, or whatever approximates our immediate perception. We could imagine a hypothetical scenario where our perception was tied to things that had occurred 1 day ago. This seems strange, but if you’re an epiphenomenalist about consciousness then this could be plausible.

I would say there is just a physical reason why this is the case. Perception of reality is a type of information and this information gets processed rather quickly. When light strikes your eye it hyper polarizes the cells there and sends a signal to your occipital lobe to be perceived as a sight experience. All of that happens rather quickly. Your brain doesn’t have a way for this information to be processed and experienced at any other time but now.
