I believe his stuff was thrown out in the trash after he died--it was only saved by some sharp-eyed individual, a spiritual antecedent to the Instar editors. (And subsequently his paintings and diaries got snapped up by avaricious collectors who've made a mountain of cash buying and selling his work--people who would never have given Darger the time of day, while he was alive.)
