My guess is that the 300 they took off were selected to do work for them. They only needed 300 workers so the rest were sent off to be killed.

It seems crazy to me that such an insignificant event (buying some grapes) could lead to what happened.

Experience tells me that people will absolutely judge what you're selling based on how much you charge for it. I wouldn't be afraid to raise your prices honestly - you'll likely find that by doing so you'll attract a higher class of customer and also that it'll almost make you appear more attractive against places that charge more.

As crazy as it sounds, if I see you for half the price of similar offerings (or indeed even inferior ones), my first question is going to be "so what's wrong with it?". Perhaps not what you want potential customers to be thinking.

My understanding is that when you've got such a large system that's so well entrenched and everyone just goes along with it, it's hard to question it. The soldiers involved probably never thought to question it because they never saw any opposition to it - it never occurred to them that what they were doing might be wrong.
