As some additional info on this, the purpose was to teach them that discrimination (i.e. against black people) is wrong, by allowing them to empathise with victims of discrimination.

A follow-up many years later suggested that it helped reduce discrimination in those children on a long term basis.

This technique is often used with adults as well, for instance to teach sensitivity in the workplace.

Definitely gonna steal a couple of these points for my sociology exam next week haha
