Not OP, but I can explain. DE is basically super-fine ground up seashells. It's so small that it physically gets in and under the plates of the bugs exoskeleton. That lifts and holds the exoskeleton apart so air gets in, and that dehydrates the bug and kills them. Insects don't have another layer of skin under their exoskeleton, so it basically exposes their innards and that is a bad thing.
It's like having a stack of books that are wet. Lift each book up and stick a rock under it, and now the air can get between the books and dry them out more effectively.
