Making game is an engineering and creative struggle. Most people who went into it with pretty good idea about them since they had some kind of discipline training in the school.
To me the biggest struggle often come from the area where we are not familiar with. Such as working with people, managing a production schedule and how to handle business relationships with your publishers or venders. They are not the direct act of development, but is crucial for the game's success. And when you run into troubles in these areas, you are often not prepared and thus more difficult.

Yes. It is a bit sad. But you can experience it by watching others playing the game.

I really hope more people like your mum can find video game enjoyable. I usually focus on one idea at a time. The idea tend to be new and unexplored in the past. So I'll keep my sketchbook doodling on things related to this one game.
