It has the little vine things that the grass shoots off of. No one took care of the yard for a while so there's about half of an inch of dead thatch around the rest of the yard.

There's a couple of sections of older growth and some new growth sprouting up in patches but the rest is dead thatch. I'm in SoCal so water-efficiency is definitely a factor.
