My parents taught me to say thank you and please when I wanted something/received anything.
On Halloween in first grade during my first year in America, we were all being lined up to get on the buses to take us home. There was a lady standing outside the bus door handing out candy corn to the kids. I get up there and got my candy corn and said thank you. She stops me and told me I was the first kid to tell her thank you and she gave me extra candy.
I was pretty shocked no one else had thanked her for giving them candy.
