I did this for the coroner's office for a few years. Such a fun job. I miss it fairly often just for the stories. What do you want to do after this job, or are you thinking of this as a career?

I recovered cadaveric hearts so that the valves could be used in replacement surgeries. Transplants are recovered by surgeons.

I'm actually in med school now and wanting to go into forensic pathology. Make those connections at the coroner's office, they help a lot. Also, look into Tissue Recovery positions. That's what I ended up doing for a couple years after the transport gig. Money is great, jobs pretty easy yet cool to talk about, and it is great experience if you do end up going the medical route.

The medical field is toxic for nurses for sure. Under appreciated and overworked. It doesn't surprise me she'd stay that. If you wanted to be a medical examiner, you would have to go to medical school. Its a medical profession. You could, however, go into death investigation if med school wasn't your thing. That was a pretty fun job I was interested in for a bit.

I have transported tons of children and babies, and then when I moved on to tissue recovery I removed a lot of their hearts. For the most part, it didn't affect me at all. They were already dead, nothing I could have done about it, there was no need for me to be upset or anything. I know it affected my coworkers who had children though, so in the end a lot of the children cases got pushed on to me. I can only recall one case of a child's death that bothered me, and it was more rage than sadness. On the bright side, baby cases paid double so that's nice I guess.
