I've always thought of Putin as less of a central figure than we might imagine in the west, and more of a pivot, a cornerstone upon which a whole range of other powerful interests are the ones actually managing the nation? Is that incorrect? An oligarch among the oliogarchs, something similar to the old tsarists, where the tsar was just the member of that family with the willingness to wrangle the power or else become the instrument of the aristocrats?
