I'm currently in Guadalajara and moving to Lima, Perú in a few weeks, also EFL teacher
I saw your bit about reading and writing, but my approach is more speaking/conversations because most of my students want to improve their speaking and I encourage them to watch English shows and movies with English subtitles or watch English lyrics for their favorite songs.
I also concur with you on the situation in México, having lived in Michoacán for a while. Although the state department has their travel cautions, don't be too hesitant to take a job in a "danger state". Michoacán is very pretty with the mountains and avocado trees, Morelia, Uruapan and Zamora are great cities (I lived in Los Reyes, but it was too rural for me). There's also the Monarch Butterfly Sanctuary in Angangueo, and Pátzcuaro Island. I believe most of the problems are near the south and on the border with Guerrero, but still be alert even in the safer cities.

I'm kind of in a similar situation right now, so obviously I'm worried about what will happen next and will I get justice

I'm a transman, and I'm not looking to get surgery to have 'male' organs, but i'm having trouble being accepted into the trans community. Part of it is that i still look female despite chestbinding and wearing men's clothing. My main problem is I need to 'play straight' for my family. Any advice on how i can still identify as male while being made up?
