We were inundated with them taking a load of oil into Fawley. It was a holiday weekend and there were yacht twats everywhere. I was off watch and up on the bridge for some chat and a bit of fresh air (I'm an engineer). As we were trying to navigate through the flotilla of white boats with wanky names, this one guy ends up pretty close to our bow and starts shouting over the VHF "Steam gives way to sail!" or something similar. Quick as you like, the mate calls back "Are you aware of the rules of the road?" to which yacht-boy snaps back telling us he's been yachting since before we were born and that of course he was fully aware of all rules of the road. The mate then said "Well then, you'll be fully aware that they are, in fact, superseded by the laws of physics, get out the way". Never got a reply.

Did you get trapped while there? Loads of the guys I sail with are now married or have been married to beauty therapists from Shields after going to college there.

Marine Second Engineer here. The guy seems 110% legit.

Marine engineer here.

I smell shite here too. No power? Bullshit. A vessel of this size has an emergency generator capable of powering all emergency essential circuits such as radios, gyro for the compass, navigation lights, at least one bilge pump, one steering gear motor etc.

An EPIRB could have been activated but there is no mention of that either.

OP also claims that s/he wasn't sure about how power was produced on board. In my experience, even the most incompetent of deck officers I've sailed with had a fundamental understanding of the power production and distribution systems on board.

This just seems a bit Walter Mitty to me.
