My uncle and my grandfather were captured at a raid in a Thai refugee camp. My grandfather was taken but my uncle was spared.

The reason is because days earlier on their trek to the border, my uncle had broken one of the lenses to his glasses. My grandfather advised him to wear it because he knew what was coming.

During the raid, my grandfather asked the Khmer Rouge to spare my uncle's life and take himself instead and lied and said my uncle was mentally disabled. The broken glasses my uncle was wearing convinced the rebels of this lie. My uncle was saved because of my grandfather and his broken glasses.

Unfortunately my grandfather was a teacher.

Not only that, they backed out of Cambodia once the Vietnam War ended, paving way for the Khmer Rouge to pounce on Phnom Penh and take control of the country. Many US supporters were killed. My family were influential US supporters, or at least anti communist. Some didn't make it to Thailand.

Thanks a lot America.

Yet today, I'm still an American and enjoy the luxuries of an American life.

Funny how the world works.

A neighbor once told my father that in a way Khmer Rouge allowed many Cambodians to live a better life in the US. My dad lost his shit. Our family was well off in Cambodia.

I was born poor and raised off of welfare in the US.

Cambodia wouldn't be the shithole it is if it wasn't for the Khmer Rouge and weak leaders. Always remember that. Many people forget this fact. Even in Cambodia.

As a college graduate there's also people with more professional experience applying for the same jobs as me.

So in other words. We're all fucked.
