You may not be eligible for student loans under ordinary circumstances, since your parents are expected to contribute. There is likely an exemption of parental contribution, or some other recourse considering your situation. Contacting StudentAidBC or the financial aid department of your intended school should help.

Also, I assume you're in the lower mainland, but if you're ever on the island, I'd love to take you for a coffee and chat. My father disowned my sister over a decade ago for moving in with a man he didn't approve of (religion based). He still won't speak to her, despite her numerous attempts to reconcile. It pretty much sucks. No death threats involved though.

For those of us who are recreational drug users or who have friends who are recreational drug users, there's a lot of concern about fentanyl in the non opiate drug supply. Is there any plan to make test kits available, much like the naloxone kits are?

According to the government and student loan regulations, her parents are obligated to contribute to her education unless she's been out of high school for 4 years, or has been in the workforce full time for 2. The expected contribution is based on income and the moderate standard of living table.
