On the job training isn't being thrown into the frying pan?

I mean, I wouldn't expect anybody to know major components of a project they just came into. But if I hired a control engineer (which is what I have been for a good part of my career), you damn well better know how to do that stuff before you're hired. Obviously I wouldn't expect someone to know a very specific control scheme they've not dealt with, but the fundamentals should be there.

Nobody should be expected to just pick up and run with a project unless they literally did the exact thing in their last job.
