My wife and our friends used to make fun of me when we would go out. I might take the long walk to avoid what I saw as possibly a bad situation. Or slip in a business because of who was behind us. My antenna goes up in town especially around a loud or suspicious group. Then we got attacked on the street at night and they don't make fun anymore. I saw them and was able to retrieve my knife and fortunately I talked (actually joked) my way out of that bad situation. Now my wife watches and follows along when I do what I do.

We were leaving a concert a few months ago with two friends and a group of young males were behind us. I said to me friends "hey look at this" and we stepped to the other side of the street. When I didn't have anything to show them my wife told them "he's just trying to get behind that group." I was so proud of her. She knew exactly what I was doing and fell in line.

Do you think a lot of the problem people have is they just don't pay attention and walk right into the fire? There's no way of really knowing but I'm sure I've stayed out of harms way many times by just keeping a close eye on my surroundings.

I was born and raised in South Atlanta. Never been robbed, never been mugged, never been harassed etc and I'm about as white as white can be.. WHITE I tell you. But I do wonder what people from "white" cities think when they stop in S ATL.

I've done close to the same thing as well. Like I said, there's no way of really knowing but I feel being observant and cautious has kept me out of plenty of bad situations. One simple thing to do is lock the car door as soon as you get in. I tell my wife all the time to do that. She says she does but who knows.
