Why would this be bad? I always fill up entirely (I drive ~700km a week, and generally pump every monday) and let it go 'till it stops, then a tiny bit more (not that it actually start pouring out). I feel the pump goes in quite deep so it shouldn't do harm.
Granted, I'm not in the USA, so I don't have to fill my 200L pickup after every 10km.
