I'm going to treat this like it is a real question, and not some asinine attempt to get under Jono's skin. Could you give examples of how they (Ubuntu) is "completely" disregarding "the philosophies and principles of the GNU project and GPL"

My apologizes. It is very common for people to question a company or another individual about all manner of things without citing their reasons. Even though you may have been attempting to be succinct it had the air of "troll" about it.
Your question is a valid one, and my comment was not meant to be an insult to it,your opinion, or you personally. It was however a challenge to you, to justify the question and prove its validity. Which you did.
Hopefully Mr. Bacon can answer your question now, given that it's scope has been narrowed and identified.

I think most audio enthusiasts would say its the sound "round trip" latency introduced by Pulse Audio. But given that Pulse solves more issues for desktop users than it creates there is no reason to drop it. That being said if you have a good sound card that has multiple hardware channels you can kill pulse and use the hardware directly which helps.
I can't speak to applications as the ones available seem to do what I need them to do.

In your personal opinion (and I will be compelled to give mine) what is the biggest "Why haven't we fixed this yet!" irritation you have for Ubuntu on the desktop? Not talking about lack of this kind of application or what have you, but just day to day irritations.
