Having served in Korea (US Army, I guess obviously), I worked with KATUSAs and had good working relationships, at the least, with them, to include one that I got to be really good friends with. I went to a New Year's party with him and met Dynamic Duo and Lee Hyori.

The consensus among the ones I talked about it with was that it was easier to be a KATUSA than "normal" ROK soldiers, so that's why I asked what the "normal" ones thought of them. They went home most weekends, they got both American and Korean holidays off, and they worked our hours (which is to say, fewer than what we had heard you guys did), with our equipment. We had to respect their rank, which actually did often cause friction, because you know how long it takes to get Sergeant in the ROK army- it takes about twice that in the US Army, so you'd have people that had been in three or even four years having to take orders from someone who'd been in for a year and a half and they often wouldn't like it.

They still got paid like shit, though. 감사합니다!

What do you think about KATUSAs? Jealous that they had it easier? Look at them as rich kids who bought their way out of a "real" enlistment? Obviously your English is money, so was there some reason why you weren't one?
