I watched my father on a ventilator and he was never the same afterwards. I'd rather they just let me die than go on one. I've given my wife instructions to that effect.

I've read that being on a ventilator can sometimes cause cognitive changes in those who survive. Can you explain why this happens? I've seen this first-hand with my father who was on one for two weeks. He was clearly not the same thereafter: more belligerent, less humorous.
